Bio Medical Photonics is a general name for a variety of light based technologies, aimed for biological and medical applications.
The consortiums' objective is to develop photonic based generic technologies, in order to create a critical mass of diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for the bio medical field in general, and the gastrointestinal tract diseases in particular. To reach this goal, the consortium members are sophisticatedly using variety of light energy resources such as: Hyperspectral imaging, fluorescence and luminescence spectroscopy, IR imaging (including thermal imaging), identification of unique spectral signatures, utilization of photoactive chemicals and measurements of natural and artificial biological markers. Moreover, they seek to combine different technologies and create a highly sensitive and reliable diagnostic tool. The consortium members will develop advanced technologies of image processing, optical techniques of wavelength splitting, efficient light sources and detectors, and integrate them with technologies from the miniaturization field to create scanners, detectors, and other required devices, which will enable practical use of developed diagnostic techniques.
The developed technologies will be utilized in light transferring systems like endoscopes, wave guides, optical fibers or video capsules to enable minimal invasive, real time optical biopsy. The knowledge obtained using these technologies will be analyzed, processed and integrated using unique algorithms developed by the consortiums members as well, right after the data is taken from the examined tissue.
The general idea is described in the following sketch:
